This is a church dedicated to St. Frances of Assissi, which was built in 17-something. Although England has plenty of old architecture, it "hit" me more in Palermo, how people in Europe just live amongst history. If we had something this old in North America, we'd have plunked a fence around it, smacked a "heritage site" plaque on it and started charging admission. Here, it's just part of the neighborhood. The dilapidated nature of some of these beautiful churches and buildings really added to their romance and charm.

The black and white checks painted on the wall are a familiar site in Palermo. These are the colors of their football club, and every street had painted walls or balconies and alleys festooned with banners and flags supporting the team. Sicilian men must be really confident in their masculinity, as I saw alot of them strutting around Palermo in hot pink football scarves or jerseys. I bought one for Al...I doubt he'll ever wear it but I thought it was a "very Palermo" souvenir to bring back for him.
